Swiss Mushroom Melt Delight

Prepare the patties: In a small bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until just combined (avoid overmixing, as this can make the patties tough). Form the mixture into 2 equal-sized patties, about 1/2-inch thick. Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from bulging while cooking.
Sauté the mushrooms: Place the sliced mushrooms in a bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix well. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are softened and lightly browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Cook the patties: Heat the oil in the skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the hot skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, or until cooked to your desired level of doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place two slices of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and allow the cheese to melt.
Toast the bread: While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the sourdough or rye bread slices. This can be done in a toaster, under a broiler, or in a dry skillet.
