Step 1: Cook the Sausage
Brown the Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 pound of breakfast sausage. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it’s browned and thoroughly cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. If desired, you can choose a spicy sausage for an extra kick!
Step 2: Make the Roux
Add Flour: Sprinkle 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage. Stir well to combine, and cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flour to absorb the fat and flavors.
Step 3: Add the Milk
Pour in the Milk: Gradually add 3 cups of whole milk to the skillet, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Step 4: Season the Gravy
Season: Add salt and black pepper to taste. You may also incorporate 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder for extra flavor. Continue to stir until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency, about 5-10 minutes.
Step 5: Serve
